Groom Place

Map

Groom Place, a pretty cobbled mews dating from the early 19th century, is entered from the south side of Chester Street.

It contains some delightful mews houses. Another entrance leads out into Chapel Street.

Many of the houses have brick elevations, which have been painted, giving the mews a pleasantly carnival air. Two houses at the north end still have original 1820s shop fronts.

The 'Horse and Groom' Pub is tucked away in one corner of the mews. It has plenty of attractive flower displays and tables outside for hot summer days, and a small dark wooden panelled bar for the winter evenings. Outside the pub is painted green.

Also in the mews is a rather unique corner shop cum café called "Vicolo Deli - General Store", which sells coffee, tea and breakfast etc. A house in the north part of the mews is particularly noticeable for its carvings of cherubs sunk into the wall.
